Isabella Simpson was born in Scotland. She spent some of her life in New Zealand and after marrying moved to Hawaii. This was the first book to illustrate flowers from Hawaii in colour.

Encouraged by Sir Joseph Hooker, Isabella published her watercolours and observations in a book on flowers of Hawaii. Finally in 1884, Isabella and her husband made the long voyage to London to put her findings into print as Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands.
